2019-2020 Chapter Leadership Conference

The 2019 Chapter Leadership Conference was hosted by the Alpha Iota chapter of Tau Beta Sigma and the Kappa Alpha chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Minnesota.

2017 Chapter Leadership Conference:

This year’s Chapter Leadership Conference was hosted by the Zeta Nu and Eta Pi chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

District Day #1: University of Kansas

Friday September 15 – Saturday September 16th

Our first District Day was hosted by the Zeta Delta and Eta Zeta chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS.

Guest Speaker:

Dr. Matthew Smith, Director of the Marching Jayhawks, graciously served as our speaker for this District Day. We spoke to the attending chapters about the history of wind ensembles, what the future might look like, and how both KKY and TBS chapters can assist their band directors create the best ensemble possible, from excellent service to just having a good attitude.

District Day #2: University of Nebraska at Kearney

The 2nd District Day was held on October 13-14th at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. It was hosted by the Theta Mu chapter of TBS and the Iota Psi chapter of KKY.

District Day #3: Colorado School of Mines

The Third District Day was held on February 16-17th at Colorado School of Mines. It was hosted by the Xi chapter of KKY.

Guest Speaker:

Nic Rorrer is a Life Member of the Eta Beta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at Virginia Tech. As a student, he was heavily involved in the Marching Virginians as a proud member of the Baritone section and served as the band’s Operation Officer during his senior year. In the fraternity Nic served as Chapter Secretary, Vice President and President as well as Northeast District Secretary/Treasurer from 2010-2011. Nic graduated with his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering in 2011 and immediately started pursuing his Ph.D. at the Colorado School of Mines under the tutelege of John Dorgan studying Polymer (Plastic) Processing, and subsequently completed his thesis in the Fall of 2015. Outside of his PhD studies Nic was involved with the music program at Mines serving as an Assistant to the Band Director since 2012. In addition, Nic has been the Chapter Sponsor of the Colorado School of Mines since January of 2012 and currently serves on the fraternity’s Alumni Association Board of Directors. In addition to serving on the AABOD, Nic has been involved with the Midwest District Alumni association since 2012 serving as Member at Large for KKPsi from 2012-2013 and as MWDAA President since 2013 (However, Nic will be stepping down at this MWD Convention). In his daily life Nic is a Researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory attempting to synthesize novel materials from bioderived feedstocks. In Nic’s limited free time he enjoys hanging out with his dog Bayou, practicing yoga, continuing to serve as the Xi chapter sponsor, and eating good food. He currently resides in Golden, CO.

The first MW District Day was hosted by the Alpha Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Colorado at Boulder in Boulder, CO.

District Day #2: Northern Iowa

November 5-6th

The second MW District Day was hosted by the Zeta Nu chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA.

District Day #3: University of Missouri

February 10-12th

This District Day was hosted by the Zeta Omega chapter of Tau Beta Sigma and the Eta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.

2016 Chapter Leadership Conference:

This year’s Chapter Leadership Conference was hosted by the Zeta Delta and Eta Zeta chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Kansas.

Guest Speakers:

Joint Speaker: Mike Jones, director of Bands at Lawrence High School

A Kansas Native, Mike earned his Bachelors of Music Education degree at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and his Masters Degree from the American Band College at Southern Oregon University. In the summer of 2001, Mike was awarded the Outstanding Young Bandmaster’s award by the Kansas Band Masters Association. In 2009 he was named the Northeast District KMEA Band Director of the Year.  He is currently serving as the KMEA All-State Jazz Chair.

Jones’ presentation focused on team-building exercises and listening activities. He had no physical presentation materials.

Tau Beta Speaker: Dina Evans, University of Kansas Assistant Dean for Student Opportunity, School of Music

Dina Pannabecker Evans was hired in 2005 to initiate career services specifically for Fine Arts students. With the development of the School of Music, her focus shifted to career services and outreach for musicians, including the management of REC100, a performance-based class required of all undergraduates. She now teaches the Business of Music (MUS 586) and is the scholarship officer for the school.

Evans received her DMA in organ performance from KU, studying with James Higdon. She is the Co-Director of Music at Country Club Christian Church, a 3,000-member congregation in Kansas City, Missouri, and has performed on and off-campus with a variety of KU ensembles.
